About Institute of Hansen's Disease
The Institute of Hansen's Disease traces its origins to the Catholic Leprosy Service Laboratory at St. Mary’s Hospital, established in 1961 with the support of Father Joseph A. Sweeny, M.M. of the Maryknoll Fathers, USA, and the Catholic Kura Association of Korea. Over the past 65 years, the Institute has operated outpatient clinics and mobile medical services for patients with Hansen’s disease, contributing to their treatment and rehabilitation. It has also conducted basic and clinical research on Hansen’s disease.
